Prison Bars Cannot Confine Ideas
After WWI, crippling poverty, high inflation made for the moral ugliness
of massive economic disparity & racial - social divisions. While
the Winnipeg Trades & Labour Council called for a peaceful strike
the working poor were brutalized; labelled "Bolsheviks" or
"Foreigners." The press used the slur "bohunks"
to degrade the poor from Hungary or Bohemia (Slavic peoples). Government
& Business became partners with the Canadians claiming superiority
as "Good White Anglo-Saxons British Citizens".
Tragically, in order to sustain the largesse
profiteering of unregulated capitalism - blind prejudice becomes an
elitist comfort zone. Survival of the fittest translated to detachment
from the suffering of newer Canadians, hardly Christian charity. The
T. Eaton Company supplied "specials" police to physically
squash the protest. Women strikers unplugged telephone lines right after
scabs plugged them in. These women walked beside their men as members
of the Central Strike Committee & the Women's Labour League. On
Bloody Sunday 2 protestors were murdered with 30 abused then arrested.
It took twenty years after the Winnipeg General Strike of May 1919 for
collective bargaining to be recognized in Canada.
Carole Payne
"Unions may legitimately resort to strikes where this is the only
available means to the justice owed by workers."

"What makes life more meaningful & joyful are spiritual values,
which help us to respect
our rivers, mountains, sea & one another.
Therefore we need a massive, global theological
renewal & reconstruction regarding our
understanding of God, the Creator & the Sustainer, in the light
of the environmental
crisis facing the earth.....Christians you are
"earth-keepers". Rise up to your calling."
